VOLUNTEER TO SUPPORT RECONSTRUCTION EFFORTS IN KENYA

Kenya has recently overcome a serious humanitarian and political crisis. The crisis was a product of highly   contested presidential elections that have seen over 1000 people killed and 400,000 displaced from their homes now living in camps having gone through untold sufferings and threats of death.

The recent ethnic violence has seriously impacted on the   social, emotional, physical and financial well being of individuals and families. This has resulted in significant social and economic costs to families and communities with women and children being the most affected. There is a need for widespread sensitization on conflict prevention and management and the promotion of peace and healing and above all serious and sustainable mitigation efforts and structures to prevent such violence that threatened to tear the country apart.

At the same time, affected families and households do not have the capacity to assure their future well being without assistance and will live in fear of ethnic violence for many years to come. Although the government is working on the implementation of the political accord, there is no mechanism to guarantee peace among conflicting neighbors, now and in the future. There exists volunteer opportunities to support community members rebuild their lives and to reduce the causes of conflict and promote peace, healing and reconciliation.

Action Africa is working with partners involved in the reconstruction efforts to accommodate volunteers in the programme. There exists volunteer opportunities for teaching English and Maths in the camps, counseling services for the traumatized women and children as well as general social work in the camps.

PHASE ONE: LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL IMMERSION

Action Africa Volunteer programme offers a one week of language and cultural orientation programme. This will give you a first hand understanding of the culture,  politics and the Kenyan   communities before visiting the rural areas or the urban slums where our projects are located .However, you can choose to take the Orientation or go directly into a volunteer project. If you decide to participate in the language and cultural immersion, your program begins with a welcome to Kenya dinner with cultural entertainment from some of the community youth and children’s groups we work with. During the dinner, volunteers meet the heads or community projects where they would be working .We then take three days of language classes, cultural immersion, and travel experiences in Nairobi.  The  language and cultural lessons are done in the morning and while the afternoon will be spent with traveling  to  Nairobi National Park, Bomas of Kenya cultural extravaganza or visiting museums or cultural centers.  After, the three days, volunteers will be take another three days on a safari to selected sites outside Nairobi, the Capital City. (Nairobi is the modern capital city of Kenya aka the "Green City in the Sun." )  During the one week immersion, the volunteers are allocated a (one on one) personal guide who will help you interpret language and situations about Kenya. By the end of the immersion programme, the volunteer becomes an ‘authority’ in African Cultural issues.

The highlights of the immersion programme are as follows:
